Monthly car rental vs leasing: which is cheaper under a year?

· Amber Car Rental

If you need a car for a few months rather than a few days, you are choosing between a monthly rental and a short lease. The honest answer is that it depends on how long "a few months" turns out to be.

Where the line falls

Roughly a year, with the caveat that it moves depending on your circumstances.

Under a year, monthly rental usually wins. Not on the sticker price — a lease payment often looks lower — but on everything around it. A lease wants a deposit, a credit check, and an early-termination charge if your plans change. Rental wants a card and a licence.

Past a year, leasing generally wins. The monthly cost is lower and the deposit is amortised over enough months to stop mattering.

What people forget to count

Flexibility has a price, and it is usually worth paying. Relocations slip. Contracts get extended or cut short. Ending a lease early is expensive in a way that ending a rental is not, and if there is any real chance your dates move, that optionality is the thing you are actually buying.

Maintenance and registration. On a rental they are ours. On a lease they are increasingly yours, and a service in month seven is a bill you did not budget for.

Deposit. A lease deposit is money you do not have for several months. That is a genuine cost even though it comes back.

How our monthly pricing works

Every vehicle has daily, weekly and monthly rates. You do not have to book in exact months to get the monthly price — the cheapest combination is applied automatically, so 34 days is priced as a month plus a few days rather than as 34 separate days.

There is no credit check. You need a valid licence, a card in your own name, and to meet our minimum age.

The short version

Under a year, or if there is any chance your plans shift: rent monthly. Definitely more than a year and your dates are fixed: get a lease quote and compare it properly. Anyone who tells you one always beats the other is selling something.
